Low Carb Diet Follies and the Holidays

Thanksgiving is over. Now we’re into the hardcore holiday season. What are the next 4-5 weeks going to be like for you? Will you be like Bill Johnson?

Bill Johnson – “Boy, thanksgiving was great. I absolutely love stuffing, cranberry sauce, turkey, and all the pies. Ohhh those pies were soooo good. I definitely got sidetracked from my diet over the holiday weekend but that’s okay because it only happens once a year. I need to get back in the gym and starting eating right again. I never reached my new year’s resolution goal of losing ten pounds. I’m actually two pounds heavier. I think I’ll just do the Atkins diet and lose all that weight before Christmas.”

Bill never bothered to read the Atkins diet book. But he started the “Atkins diet” anyway by cutting out all his carbs, eating bacon and eggs every morning, steak at lunch, cheese for snacks, and chicken thighs at dinner, and sugar free jello with fresh whipped cream for dessert. For the first day it was a lot of fun for Bill as he got to eat lots of “bad” foods. By the end of the week the novelty of his 5 strips of bacon every morning had worn off. He decided to take a week off from the gym so that his body could “adapt” to the low carbs. By that Friday Bill had lost 5lbs – halfway to his goal – (yeah!). But Saturday night was his first of 5 holiday parties. Bill got busy putting up the Christmas tree and didn’t have time to eat much during the day on Saturday. He got to the party, saw the food, and lost it.

By the end of the night Bill had consumed easily 250grams of carbs. He was bloated, uncomfortable, and disappointed with himself. Bill woke up Sunday morning stepped on the scale and found that he had gained back the 5lbs and 2 more!

He moped around the house feeling bad about his dieting failures and concluded that low carb diets just wouldn’t work for him. He needed something different, newer, and better. So he hopped on the internet to find the “answer”….poor misguided soul.
I could go on but you get the picture. Heck you might be thinking “Get the picture, Mike you just painted MY picture.”

The important messages here are as follows:

  • Don’t start a diet based on a desperate emotional state.
  • Know what you’re getting into before you start.
  • If you are on a nutritional plan for 1 week and stop – the diet isn’t what failed you.
  • If you are going to do the Atkins Diet read the damn book!

Have a great day,

Mike

P.S. If you want to meet you New Years resolution weight goals once and for all then you need and easy to follow diet and can fit into you lifestyle.
