Ask Dr. Mike: Fish Oil Supplement Purity

by

Fish oil is an extremely beneficial supplement for you to take with respects to your heart health, body weight, and overall inflammatory balance. However, there is a dark side to fish oil – toxins and impurities. In this edition of Ask Dr. Mike you’ll learn how you can see the levels of impurities in your fish oil supplement via IFOS Program. The impurities in fish oil become more of an issue when you start using high dosages than the label recommends. This is happens if you are purchasing ‘drug store’ quality fish oil. These products supplements only contain about 300 mg of omega-3s per gram so you’ll need to take much more than the label recommends in order to get the effective dose of omega-3s that you are looking for. I generally recommend between 1.5-3 grams of EPA/DHA per day.
